About the project
Details

Many years ago I walked into a comedy club for an open mic night for a five minute set. Naturally I bombed hard, but this just fired me up to go again.

This led to a meeting with renowned local comedian John Vlismas, and blossomed into a collaboration spanning years.

I directed multiple shows of his including the widely acclaimed comedy specials 38. Special and The Good Racist.

Working with John proved a masterclass in comedy and these shows taught me the art of pacing and finding “the cut” in live shows.

A skill that paved the way for a series of Comedy Central specials hosted by John, featuring comedy stalwarts like Celeste Ntuli and Nik Rabinowitz, centred around themes like sex, religion, and race.

Beyond directing the shows, I also wrote and directed themed skits, leveraging the comedians to create promos for the shows.

The gift of bombing on that first night gifted me with the freedom to embrace discomfort, find meaning in adversity and persevere until I met the challenge.

Which in this case, meant making thousands of people across South Africa laugh.
